Our Staff

Toronto Climbing Academy instructors are certified by the Ontario Rock-Climbing Association (ORCA) or OCGA. In addition to their technical expertise, they are also talented educators.

Our owner, Sasha Akalski, is an experienced professional climbing coach with a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education, and over 34 years of professional involvement as a climber, official, international judge and coach.

He graduated from the Sports University in Bulgaria and went on to coach the Bulgarian Sports Climbing Team. Sasha is former Canadian representative for the International Sport Climbing Federation.

As the gym's head trainer and program designer, Sasha is dedicated to providing quality programs at all levels.

Our route-setters, Hristo and Marieta Akalski, have been competing for the last seven years in National and International events:

Marieta: 2001 Canadian National Bouldering Champion.
  • Marieta became in 1999 Canadian Junior Champion and placed 13th at the Junior World Championships in Italy.
  • In 1998 she participated in two major events, finishing 2nd at Junior International Competition in San Francisco, and 8th at US Nationals for Men and Women.
  • She won the 1997 Junior National Championships and placed 8th at the Junior World Championships in Austria. In the same year she finished 8th at The US Nationals for Men and Women.
  • In 1996 she placed 9th at the US National Championships for Men and Women.
  • Winner of the Junior North American Championship in 1995.
Hristo has over 12 years of climbing experience. He is one of the primary instructors at TCA. He has been route setting professionally since 1995.
